As summer rushes on I am swept up in the current of parties, school and nursery events. I have a back log of finished makes to show, but I am not going to show them now. Instead this is what I am currently making. I was inspired by reading about the
Vintage Pattern Pledge to finally make up a vintage pattern. This 1972 Style 3590 pattern was given to me by
Phillippa. It was last year I think. I like the square neck shape, the buttons and the yoke with gathers. The pattern is labelled "Sandra" and I cannot help but wonder who Sandra was. She had carefully cut out the pattern for the short sleeved tunic.
I am making View A, the dress version. I hesitated for a long time over the puffed sleeves, not sure if anyone over the age of ten should wear puffed sleeves. But then my upper arms are not what they used to be and I want some coverage some days. So I am going to test the puffed sleeves by making and wearing them. If people shout and point in the street, well then I will know the true power,horror and affront to scoiety of middle aged woman in puffed sleeves. But most likely no one will even notice except me.
You can see I have gone wrong stitching the sleeve insertion and caught a bit of the yoke, creating an annoying tuck, so the next stage will involve my unpicker. I am sewing it up in tiny stages when the littlest is at nursery or asleep, in between taxi driving the big two around. I have a list of jobs as long as can be but I am steadfastly ignoring them to finish my dress for holidays.
This does Look really promising. It was the square neck that drew me to the pattern as well, then reality hit home that I was never going to find the time/patience to grade up to fit my larger bust! I hope it makes a lovely dress for you. I also wonder about the names on sewing patterns, why were they named? Maybe they were put aside in a shop after ordering? I don't know but I often see old patterns with someone's name on the front! X x

DeleteI am also a sucker for a square neck. Really cute pattern, it's going to look great on you. And I'd call that a very lightly puffed sleeve. Not too girly at all!

DeleteI really like that pattern, I think its going to look fantastic when its finished! I like a puffy sleeve sometimes, I think it adds a good bit of body. I'm going to be on the hunt for square necked patterns now!

DeleteLooks like a lovely start :-). I think the puffed sleeve goes really well with the rest of the look, so why not? Besides, as I always like to tell myself, it's not like these things get more appropriate as we get older - now is the best time to rock the look!! ;-). It's great rationalization. Anyhow, hope your summer is going well!

ReplyDeleteNo I still haven't photographed it - it has been a bit too cold to wear it recently. But I am optimistic things will warm up and I will wear it again. And complete the post xx
DeleteOooh, that's a lovely choice of fabric for that pattern. I have that pattern too in fact. Don't take this the wrong way, but I considered making it when I first discovered I was pregnant for the early to middle bit of pregnancy because I thought it'd give me a bit more room where it was needed but without actually looking like maternity wear. I think I made the Tova tunic instead for that purpose, but I'm very tempted to gee this a whirl too at some point. You could always reduce the puff a little bit if you want the look but without the full volume? Can't wait to your finished version. Enjoy the school holidays xxx
