Finished Nora

I finished the Nora top from Ottobre magazine on wednesday but it has been so gloomy and dark here I struggled to get a decent photo. I wonder if other bloggers find it amazing how different colours look in different photos and light conditions. The sun has come out today so here is Nora. I made it in a light grey jersey knit which I bought last year on ebay. I have resolved to stop buying knit fabrics on ebay without seeing a sample first as I like this fabric but it is quite clingy and reveals EVERY lump and bump. If I had had it in my hand before buying I would not have bought it! But such is the the Ebay madness and impulse. I was determined to use this fabric up and not waste it.

It is a top which is plain and not much by itself but I think it will be a really useful basic item. Due to the lump revealing quality of the fabric I think I will wear it with cardigans.

The pattern was quite straightforward to follow and the tracing was easier than I had imagined. I did find it a bit strange to follow a pattern entirely with text and no diagrams as I am quite a visual learner. While sewing the yoke I was thinking how great this pattern could be for refashioning and using with contrasting yokes, so you may guess what is currently on my ironing board awaiting finishing.

  1. OOOh - yoke excitment! It looks that step up from a basic long sleeved T with the yoke - I like it & it does look very useful. I agree with you on impulse Ebay knit buying - little did I realise that the jersey I'd won was of the silky lycra variety - I thought it would be plain old cotton based!

  2. I love the yoke, and well done for sewing a curve to a curve so smoothly with a slippery knit!
I've bought knits on ebay too and ended up using them to sew underwear for myself. That clingy quality is good for pants and vests :)

  3. Ditto on the yoke! I love how that looks -- I always manage to screw up a top when it comes to the neckband, and I like how wide and elegant yours is. I agree about the fabric, I found some soft $1/yard rayon knit -- silky and lovely == and I've got yards and yards of it. Problem? Difficult to sew, and super clingy in all the wrong ways. It's just been languishing in my stash. Ugh!

  5. That yoke really makes the top! It's such a great color for a layering piece too. Looks like the perfect versatile handmade piece - interesting details, neutral color, lightweight enough to go under multiple cardigans ... can't wait to see it in its refashioned incarnation!

  6. Thank you for all the lovely comments. I do like a bit of praise. I too am not very good at t shirt neckbands and this is a good alternative. I am resolutely sworn off buying knits online though without samples.
